York Christmas Market 2026: Dates, the New Tuesday Closure and a Festive Day Plan
York, England

York's St Nicholas Fair opens on 12 November 2026 and runs to 21 December, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with around 100 red-roofed chalets down Parliament Street and across St Sampson's Square. New for 2026, it closes every Tuesday as a rest day. Entry is free, and 85% of the traders are from Yorkshire.

The 2026 dates and the Tuesday rest day

Check the day of the week before you book travel. The York Christmas Market, the St Nicholas Fair (Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square) trades daily from 12 November to 21 December 2026, Tuesdays excepted. A Tuesday visit gets you the city and no market.

The chalets are wooden and alpine in style, strung with warm bulb lights, with the medieval rooflines of Parliament Street behind them. Every food stall is regional. Prices are £ and there is no door policy, so you walk straight in.

The crowd peaks between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at weekends. Weekday mornings are quiet.

Shambles Market and the Bettys queue

Shambles Market & Shambles Food Court (the Shambles) is two minutes from the chalets. Permanent open-sided stalls fill a sunken courtyard ringed by the timber-framed, overhanging upper storeys of the Shambles, and a covered row of traders runs along one side with communal picnic benches. Entry is free and trading is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It is the best-value hot food in the centre, at £. It takes no reservations, and it closes only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Bettys Café Tea Rooms (St Helen's Square) is 100m from the market, behind a curved art-deco corner frontage with deep bay windows of iced cakes. Inside there is mahogany and marble, white-aproned staff and a pianist on the stairs. It opens 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The ground-floor café takes no reservations and the December queue is long. Only the first-floor Belmont Room afternoon tea is bookable, at £45 a head.

Indoor Christmas when the weather turns

Christmas at York Castle Museum, York
Christmas at York Castle Museum, York

Christmas at York Castle Museum runs 14 November to 3 January. The museum holds a full-size indoor Victorian street, Kirkgate, under a dark roof, with cobbles, gas lamps and real shopfronts dressed for Christmas. A working period kitchen sits off it. A costumed Scrooge works the galleries on Fridays and a green-robed Victorian Father Christmas on Sundays. Admission is ££, York Museums Trust takes group rates by pre-booking, and there are relaxed-visit sessions. Keep it for a wet day, when every chalet queue is standing in the rain.

Fairfax House — A Christmas Tail, York
Fairfax House — A Christmas Tail, York

Fairfax House is dressed as A Christmas Tail from 14 November to 3 January, £9.50 for the Town Mouse and Country Mouse staging. The Georgian townhouse has carved plasterwork ceilings, a great stone staircase and a dining table laid as an 18th-century Christmas feast. The Christmas by Candlelight evenings, 16 to 21 December, cost £15 and light the rooms with candles alone. Capacity is limited on those nights, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.

York's Chocolate Story (King's Square) runs guided tours through the Rowntree and Terry's story, past tempering stones and copper chocolate pots, and finishes with you rolling your own truffles at a work bench. York invented the KitKat and the Terry's Chocolate Orange. The Christmas tours run 28 November to 23 December and an adults' masterclass runs alongside them. Admission is ££. The tour is fully accessible and there are carer tickets.

The Minster trees and the free carol tickets

York Minster lines the aisles of its pale gothic nave with around 100 individually decorated Christmas trees from 28 November to 5 January, the Great East Window above them. Sightseeing admission covers the festival, costs £13 to £28, and groups can book it.

The carol services and the Advent Procession are the evening version, the nave candlelit. They are free, but you still need a ticket. Tickets are released on fixed dates by phone and web weeks ahead, and they go fast. The online booking system has been unreliable this season, so use the phone.

A festive sailing from King's Staith

City Cruises York (King's Staith) sails the Ouse on festive trips from 21 November to 31 December. The boat is flat-topped with a glass roof, decorated and lit, and it passes under Lendal Bridge with the Guildhall and the Minster towers on the skyline. This is the one view of York you cannot get on foot. Fares are ££.

Pre-book. The Santa sailings wrap gifts in advance, so there are no walk-ups. Parties under 20 book online, parties of 20 or more must contact the office directly, and you can charter a whole boat.

Mulled wine and ice in Museum Gardens

THOR'S Tipi Bar (Museum Gardens) sets giant canvas tipis with open log fires beside the ruined gothic arches of St Mary's Abbey. Mulled wine is what you come for, at ££, and you drink it by a real fire inside an abbey ruin. No booking needed. Walk in.

The same operator runs THOR'S on ICE, a 4,950 sq ft open-air rink behind York Art Gallery, open 13 November to 3 January. It is the first ice rink in York city centre since 2010. Snow falls on the hour. You pre-book skating slots per head.

Stonegate, the Shambles and Piccadilly after dark

House of the Trembling Madness (48 Stonegate) is a bottle shop with a small upstairs room above it, inside a Norman building dating to about 1180. Exposed roof beams run overhead and mounted taxidermy heads crowd every wall. It is walk-in only, 10 a.m. to midnight, prices ££, and it won a UK independent-beer-retailer award in 2024. The upstairs room is genuinely small, and a party above about six will not get a table together. Use the Stonegate address. The Lendal site traded under the name and is no longer the same operation.

Valhalla York sits just off the Shambles, a dark low-ceilinged cellar-feel bar with carved Norse woodwork and hides and furs thrown over the benches. They serve mead in horns, the food is meat boards, and rock and metal play. Door staff work weekend nights and it trades to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Book ahead for food. It is open all year, which makes it the reliable late option once the chalets have shut for the night.

Spark:York (Piccadilly) stacks two storeys of brightly painted shipping containers around a mural-covered yard, with festoon lights strung overhead and a rooftop terrace. Independent bars and street-food traders fill the containers. Entry is free, prices are £, and it is five minutes' walk from the chalets. The lease is secured to September 2030, and a new planning scheme is resurfacing the forecourt.

Pantomime at the Theatre Royal

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs runs 4 December to 3 January at York Theatre Royal (abbey ruins in the walls beneath it), a 1744 house with a red-and-gold Victorian horseshoe auditorium and tiered boxes, a modern glazed foyer grafted onto the old stone front. If you are visiting from abroad, pantomime is the local tradition that needs explaining, and this is the show to learn it at. Tickets are ££ and every performance carries a family ticket, with savings up to £61. Captioned and accessible dates are listed. Berwick Kaler's rival pantomime now plays at the Grand Opera House.

Two trips outside the walls

Yorkshire's Winter Wonderland (York Designer Outlet) is three miles south of the walls, so it is a trip in its own right and not a market stroll. In its 21st year, it opens 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 with the biggest outdoor rink in the north of England, 975 sq m of ice with a 30ft lit Christmas tree in the middle of it. Log cabins and illuminated trees ring the rink, with a café at the edge and a raised viewing platform above. Entry and parking are free. Skating is ££, booked by timed slot.

A Dickens of a Christmas at Castle Howard runs 12 November to 3 January, 15 miles out. The baroque domed palace is approached along a lake, the Great Hall is dressed floor to ceiling, and the candlelit state rooms carry Dickensian projections and soundscapes. The Atlas fountain plays outside. Nothing else within reach of the city is dressed on this scale. Entry is timed and must be pre-booked, £24 to £40 a head depending on the date, plus £7.25 parking (£££). Popular dates sell out. There is a BSL and relaxed performance option, and coach parties go through a group-visits desk.
